About this deal

Our updated CPU suite for 2023 includes various benchmarks, tests, and workloads designed to show variance in performance between different processors and architectures. These include UL's latest Procyon suite with both office and photo editing workloads simulated to measure performance in these tasks, CineBench R23, Dwarf Fortress, Blender 3.3, and C-Ray 1.1. AMD's chipset driver manages which cores are best suited for specific tasks so games that benefit from V-Cache, for instance, get put on V-Cache cores while other apps would get thrown onto the full frequency cores. If you compare its power consumption with its performance, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D may well produce the best performance-per-watt ratio of any processor we’ve tested, though it would certainly be a close call with some like the Ryzen 9 7900 also performing impressively here. This is one area that AMD has a notable advantage over Intel, though energy efficiency doesn’t often drive many purchasing decisions. A processor that has impressive performance might fit well in a high-end work system, but be an unaffordable option for a home PC. A relatively low-performance chip might appear inadequate at first but be an ideal solution in a small form-factor PC where cooling and power limitations prevent power-hungrier chips from being used.

You can tinker with the performance profile to a degree in the Ryzen Master utility if you need to eek out some extra non-gaming performance, but how effective that will be will take a lot more testing on my part than I have time for in this review. Personally, I wouldn't even want to push it further than where its at, since the prospect of a processor running under 100W paired with a newer GPU running less than 200W has me seeing mini gaming PC builds dancing through my head. As a reminder, the 3D V-Cache doesn’t accelerate all titles equally. Therefore, you should also look at the individual game benchmarks in the above album to assess the overall trend. As always, the AMD vs Intel competition can vary based on the title and the GPU you use, so it's best to make an informed decision based on the types of titles you play frequently. The Ryzen 9 7900X3D has also been crafted for high-performance gaming and creating. Its cache capacity is 140MB, paired with twelve cores, twenty-four threads, and boost speeds up to 5.6GHz.In addition to synthetic tests, I used this processor as my main gaming chip for a few days to informally measure real world performance, while noting any games where performance was particularly exceptional in either direction. These are the systems I used to test desktop CPU performance for both AMD and Intel chips in this review: The Core i9-13900K is a superior offering if you're interested in performance in productivity applications. Still, the Core i7-13700K offers the lion's share of the 13900K's performance at a lower price point. In gaming, the Core i7-13700K offers similar raw and system-level pricing to the 7800X3D when you factor in the fps-per-dollar, thus also earning it a win in the pricing category. Be aware that large deltas in individual game titles, as we see with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, impact cumulative measurements. You can see examples of that in the above album in titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2021, Far Cry 6, and F1 2021. Our test suite heavily favors the improvements from 3D V-Cache, so we also included AMD’s own benchmarks in a broad range of games at the end of the above album to give you an idea of performance gains in other titles. The rest of the test results were mixed, with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D unable to secure any more clear wins. Performance in the rest of these tests were all close together, which does show that, with a card like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, at least with this game subset, you won’t see much in the way of a performance benefit from the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. You will likely need, as AMD advised us, a top-tier card like an RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 to see the 7800X3D pull away. But when you consider that 0.44%—that's less than half of one percent!—of PC gamers are using a GeForce RTX 4080 or 4090 per March 2023's Steam Hardware Survey these days, that's a niche within a niche's niche. Integrated Gaming TestsAs with all Ryzen 7000 chips, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D's RDNA 2 integrated GPU has two compute units, 4 ACE, and 1 HWS. This unit doesn't have the necessary horsepower to benefit from faster CPU cores — it is entirely GPU compute-bound. The iGPU also doesn't benefit from the 3D V-Cache tech because it resides on the I/O die and can't access the L3 cache, so performance is the same as the regular Ryzen 7000 processors (see more in our X3D iGPU testing). Tallying up the pricing numbers to compare the Core i7-13700K vs Ryzen 7 7800X3D vs Core i9-13900K can get incredibly complex once we start factoring in different classes of motherboards, so we included as much information as possible (links in the text below). Having extra cache certainly can improve performance, though. One of the most commonly known things about computers is that more RAM can help your PC work faster, and cache is in many ways no different from RAM. Though both are essential, and having more is often beneficial, having too much of either can be detrimental, or at least accrue no additional benefit. Higher-capacity RAM kits often run at slower speeds, and the overabundance of cache on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D forces it to run at slower speeds, too. Overall, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D’s performance placed it more on par with the Ryzen 5 7600 and the last-generation Intel Core i5-12600K. However, the Core i5-12600K also defeated the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in each of these tests. The Ryzen 5 7600 was generally slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with its two fewer cores, but in single-threaded tests it too held the upper hand over the 7800X3D. AMD's new AM5 platform generally carries a premium over the Intel motherboard ecosystem, but it does afford extended forward compatibility — AMD plans on supporting the AM5 platform until 2025+.

The 7800X3D's worst performance against the 13900K was Returnal, where it averaged about 12.5% fewer fps, while still managing an impressive score of 224 fps. Meanwhile, the 7800X3D battled the 13900K to a technical decision in Total War: Warhammer III (552 fps for the 7800X3D to the 13900K's 594 fps), while handily beating the more powerful processor in F1 2022 and Tiny Tina's Wonderland. Meanwhile, we've also carried over some older (but still relevant/enlightening) benchmarks from our CPU 2021 suite. This includes benchmarks such as Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, and Dr. Ian Cutress's 3DPMv2 benchmark. The one area where the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a hint of success is in the gaming market, but it's walking a thin line there. AMD provided us with data that clearly shows the Ryzen 7 7800X3D can perform better than the Intel Core i9-13900K or the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X when all three are paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. But the main reason none of my friends are upgrading their PC is not even the price, it's just that PC games have been so bad lately.The 7800X3D is incredibly power efficient, but AMD assigned a base TPD of 120W and a max 162W PPT, 15/20W higherthan the 105W/142W rating for the standard 7700X. As you'll see in the power testing section, the higher TDP rating doesn't make much sense. Regardless, you'll still need to plan for a 240mm to 280mm AIO (or better) for the best performance.

AMD reworked the CCX on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D somewhat to improve its energy efficiency compared with other Ryzen 7000-series processors that don’t have the 3D V-Cache. This was necessary to help accommodate the added heat and power demands of the 3D V-Cache, and it results in the Ryzen 7 7800X3D being one of the more energy-efficient options we’ve tested. The P-cores come with a 3.0 GHz base, but, more importantly, a 5.8 GHz boost that's a whopping 600 MHz increase over the prior gen. Meanwhile, the E-cores now have a 3.0 GHz base (+600 MHz) and stretch up to 4.3 GHz (+400 MHz). The Core i9-13900K also has 32MB of L3 and 36MB of L2 cache. This translates into a lower 4.20GHz base frequency, compared to the 4.5GHz of both the 7950X3D and 7700X, and a boost frequncy of just 5.0GHz, compared to 5.7GHz and 5.4GHz for the 7950X3D and 7700X, respectively. This is also slower than the top speed of the Core i7-13700K, which boosts up to 5.40GHz from 3.40GHz base frequency.for years I would keep youtubing 9900k vs and the price would never be worth the extra frames but after seeing how the cheapest 3d v-cache chip was top of the pile for gaming i decided to take the plunge, delighted that I have too as everything running like a dream, can especially see the large gains with a lot of cpu heavy games where my 9900k was starting to struggle slightly In contrast, Intel's chips consume far more power in every type of workload, resulting in higher thermal output. Like all AMD Zen 4 chips, though, this one will require you to upgrade to the AM5 platform, so you'll need a new motherboard if you don't already have a Zen 4 Ryzen 7000-series setup. You'll also need new DDR5 RAM, so this could be a more expensive upgrade than just the chip itself. That said, the same is pretty much true about Intel Alder Lake and Raptor Lake, so if you're upgrading from an 11000-series Intel chip or older, you're going to be paying a lot of money to make the upgrade either way.
